Students were asked to read the story “Winter afternoon” in the collection “How to tell your father to drop dead’ (Fisher, 2013). This is a story of two old, gay men who end their lives together as one of them has cancer. Students were then asked to write from the point of view of the teenage next-door neighbour, Andrew, who is only briefly mentioned in the story. Students responded exceptionally positively to the exercise, commenting on each others’ contributions and also about point of view some of them using first person and others using third person. The exercise was useful preparation for the final assignment.
