In this tutorial, first year students are asked to read a journal article about the creation of the Grand Boulevards in Paris.
They are then asked to use Google Earth (street view) to locate one of the Grand Boulevards and take note of the built form and public spaces. They are asked to take note of the built form characteristics and vistas created.
Students then move to a hard copy map of Toowoomba (or their own town for externals) and attempt to create Grand Boulevards there.
They are then asked to note the differences between society and governance in Australia now compared to France at that time.
gThis then leads to a discussion about deliberative democracy and community consultation.
