To engage with first year students’ developing capacities and vocabularies, a tutorial group must write a 250 word description of how the etymology of a word (from oed.com) assisted them in grasping its meaning.
1. Oed.com and etymologies are scaffolded in lecture
2. Tutor applies skill to difficult word from reading. (Show on screen, explain possibilities, e.g. sub (‘under’) + marine (‘water’) leads to meaning.
3. Assign task to group for submission in next tutorial. Difficult word must be from that week’s readings.
4. Student identifies difficult word, accesses oed.com, produces a guess of definitions and etymology.
