The framework challenges designers of first year undergraduate curriculum and teachers of first year to consider a variety of questions.
This framework challenges designers of first year undergraduate curriculum and teachers of first year students to consider four keys questions about students and their learning in the discipline (click on any of the questions to expand):
- Who are my students when they enter first year in my discipline?
- What do my first year students need to know and do in my discipline?
- What strategies can I use to help my students develop the knowledge and skills they need to be effective learners in my discipline?
- What will my students know and what will they be able to do at the end of their first year in my discipline?
These questions are then expanded using three different ways of thinking about curriculum from a student perspective:
- as first year students who are transitioning into university;
- as learners in our discipline; and
- as potential graduates from our discipline.
