Role play to investigate pros/cons of a new tourist development on a small island

Tutorial 1: students provided with background information on Rarotonga, Cook Islands e.g. economy, culture, environment Then the class is divided into groups representing a large international hotel company, local hoteliers, other local businesses, representatives of local population. They are told they have to argue case for/against the new hotel development depending on their role.

Between tutorial one a two students have an opportunity to work together/research their role and the Cook Islands.

Tutorial 2: in their groups students present the case for/against the development. An appointed Prime Minister makes and justifies a decision as to whether the project goes ahead.

Class assessment involves producing a table outlining the pros/cons of the development.

This exercise has been used with great success for many years and students seem to embrace it warmly.
