Detecting the politics around us: An excursion outside the lecture theatre

The focus was on awakening the relationship between self and citizen.

1. I described the excursion and why we are doing this 'real-world' task. I explained how we need to become aware of the politics around us, and to look at connections with theory.

2. l then took the students onto a local street and asked them to the find the conflict and the power tensions around them. This took an hour.

3. Students could observe in any way they liked. I roamed around the students to field questions and prompt and guide the talk, suggesting concepts and theories.

4. After an hour students returned to our predetermined meeting place to share their findings. We were surprised to find so much of the political around us.
