Students given a 20 minute presentation on the status of the African elephant population numbers, impact of poaching etc. Narrow down to Kruger National Park – how elephants are well managed and protected from poaching. Issue then too many elephants in relation to carrying capacity – loss of vegetation leas to deforestation
Students then debate (2 groups)
• Should we protect elephants
• Use ivory to sell which is contrary to CITES criteria
This method could be adapted to other issues as applicable for the subject being studied.
