Constructing an argument culminating in a role play

This activity is part of a unit entitled ‘Asia in the World’. Students will have read a chapter from Charles Halcombe’s History of East Asia (Cambridge UP, 2011) which explains China’s overwhelming influence over Japan and Korea in the early centuries AD. The text also pays attention to the push against Chinese influences in both Japan and Korea.

Students are divided into 4 groups: a pro-Chinese group in Korea; a pro-indigenous influences group in Korea; a pro-Chinese group in Japan; a pro-indigenous group in Japan. The 2 Korean groups square off against each other; so, too, do the Japanese groups. The “Japanese” students vote on the more convincing “Korean” group; the “Korean” students vote on the more convincing “Japanese” group.
